NEPHU is committed to improving the health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This can only be achieved by working in partnership with Community.
Over the 2023-24 financial year, NEPHU’s engagement with the First Nations community focused on establishing and improving relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and communities within our catchment.
To support engagement, NEPHU appointed a Koorie Engagement Officer dedicated to fostering relationships and understanding the unique needs of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sector partners and communities.
This consultation and engagement has been pivotal in broadening our reach and understanding, while also building positive working relationships with key members of the Community.
Key initiatives and activities over the past year include:
- Developing and delivering the 3KND and NEPHU ‘Health Yarn’ Collaboration
- Supporting Margaret Tucker Hostel (MTH) Tidda’s Gathering
- Launching a Priority Populations Grant Round
In addition to the listed initiatives, NEPHU has participated in over 11 Aboriginal sector or community-facing events to provide essential health promotion information and engage in conversations about health issues with community members and various sector partners present. These events include the NAIDOC Flag Raising Ceremony, Austin Health NAIDOC Grand Round, Elders Summit, Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing’s ‘Walk Against Family Violence,’ Djirra’s 16 Days of Activism, the North Metro Aboriginal Community Back-to-School event, and more.
Our team’s Engagement activities have also focused on NEPHU’s Catchment Plan areas of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and Healthy Eating, in response to needs identified by the sector and community. Some of these initiatives have included providing tailored information on SRH and Healthy Eating at community events as well as delivering sanitary products and ‘Share the Dignity’ bags to young women at Margaret Tucker Hostel.
