This World Asthma Day, NEPHU and Austin Health teamed up to create a short video series helping parents and carers better understand asthma and how to manage it in young children.
Asthma is a common chronic lung condition that affects 2.8 million Australians. Asthma remains a burden for young children and continues to drive preventable hospitalisations, impacting individuals, families, and the health system.
This year’s theme “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for all” highlights the importance of managing asthma correctly, especially for vulnerable groups like infants and children. Effective treatment is not just about having access to asthma medication, but also knowing how to use it correctly and making sure it works.
According to the National Asthma Council Australia (2024), up to 94% of people do not use their inhaler device properly, meaning their medication might not reach the lungs where it’s needed most. This can increase the risk of asthma flare-ups, hospital visits, and serious breathing difficulties.

This video series with Paediatric Nurse Megan Crawford from Austin Health covers a range of topics in asthma care and management into short videos.
Why is it important to learn about asthma?
Learning about asthma, how to correctly use an asthma inhaler, other medications and with a proper Asthma Action Plan is critical to managing symptoms more effectively.
Speak to your doctor or local GP to learn more about asthma care and medications for babies and children in your care. In case of an emergency, where you or your child is having severe difficulty breathing, call triple zero (000) immediately.
