In this episode of The Health Yarn, 3KND host Grat Hansen yarns with Cara Cook from Nutrition Australia about healthy eating.

In the latest episode of 3KND’s healthy living series, we’re introduced to Cara, an accredited practising Dietitian working with Nutrition Australia.

Cara shares her knowledge and passion for helping mob eat well, stay strong, and live healthily. Nutrition Australia is a non-profit organisation that promotes healthy eating through education, advocacy, and support.

So, what exactly is healthy eating? It’s about enjoying a variety of foods from all food groups, balancing your meals, and staying hydrated. Eating healthy supports maintaining energy levels and staying active, mental health, and helps prevent chronic diseases.

Grant and Cara discuss the complexities of cooking healthy meals, especially on a budget. They also explore how to stretch your food budget at the supermarket, and where to find support – like local food pantries and Nutrition Australia’s recipe hub.

Cara also reminds everyone in the community to make the most of food before it goes bad, understand “best before” versus “use by” dates, and follow food safety tips. Following food safety guidelines can include storing meat below raw food in the fridge, reheating food in the microwave and how long will food last in the freezer.

Importantly, there’s no ‘perfect’ way to eat. Everyone’s journey and experience is different. Cara encourages people to book their 715 Health Check and chat with health professionals about chronic disease support and meal planning. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of all ages can get their free 715 health check at Aboriginal Medical Services and bulk-billing clinics.

Eating well is more than just food – it’s about culture, connection, and support.
