In this episode of The Health Yarn, the discussion centers around crucial themes of social and emotional wellbeing, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health, and the partnerships between key organisations such as Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) and Beyond Blue.

Social and emotional wellbeing, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, is a holistic concept that extends beyond mental health.

It involves mental, emotional, social, and cultural health, and is rooted in spirituality, family, community, and connection to the land. This wellbeing is seen as collective, where individual health is tied to community and health.

Listen to this episode of The Health Yarn with Psychologist and Beyond Blue Senior Clinical Spokesperson, Dr Luke Martin and Psychiatrist, Chair of Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) and Board Member of Beyond Blue, Professor Helen Milroy AM.

The episode explores practical steps to improve wellbeing include engaging in cultural practices, connecting with family and community, and seeking support when needed.

Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) is dedicated to improving mental health outcomes for First Nations peoples by advocating for culturally safe practices within Australia’s mental health system. The organisation aims to promote cultural safety, incorporate Indigenous knowledge into care, and ensure access to services that reflect these values. The Gayaa Dhuwi Declaration, a framework for culturally appropriate mental health services, has been embraced by various health agencies to guide policy and practice. This includes incorporating traditional healing practices and cultural safety into mental health services.

Beyond Blue, a leading mental health organisation, works to support mental health across Australia, including in First Nations communities. The organisation offers 24/7 support via phone lines, online resources, and programs tailored to First Nations people. Beyond Blue aims to reduce stigma and provide information, but also to work directly with community leaders to ensure services are culturally appropriate. Many First Nations peoples contact Beyond Blue for support with mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, and trauma.

For those struggling, it’s crucial to reach out to trusted community leaders or organisations like Beyond Blue, which offer confidential support tailored to cultural needs.
