In collaboration with AIMA and ICV, NEPHU has developed two key resources: a practical guide for clinicians and a comprehensive guide for community members observing the month of Ramadan.

NEPHU, in collaboration with the Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) and the Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV), have developed two key resources for clinicians and community members during the month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is a month-long tradition in Islam that happens yearly according to the Lunar calendar. During this period, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from food, drink and intake of any other substances. The purpose of this practice is to develop self-discipline, empathy, and spiritual connection.

Muslims with specific health needs or conditions who choose to fast during Ramadan may benefit from guidance from health professionals to determine whether fasting is safe for them. Muslim people may also need support in adjusting their routines to balance both their religious practices and health needs without compromising their overall well-being. The following resources have been developed to help clinicians and community members navigate fasting safely.

Decisions regarding medication use during fasting are dependent on a case-by-case basis, guided by clinical advice, medical necessity and religious guidelines. Healthcare professionals and community members should engage in open discussions about fasting and medication management, consulting both healthcare providers and, as needed, a qualified Islamic scholar to assess medical risks and impacts on health before making any changes to medication routines.
