This episode of The Health Yarn highlights the importance of culturally safe spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and the programs that support community connection.
In this episode, 3KND host Leila (Lorell) Gurruwiwi is joined by Kristen Munro from Barrbunin Beek Gathering Place to yarn about the power of place, programs, and shared experiences in creating healthier futures for Mob.
Barrbunin Beek, located in Melbourne’s north-east, is a culturally safe space run by community for community. It offers a range of programs tailored to the needs of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of all ages and walks of life – from health and wellbeing activities, to intimate yarns about men’s and women’s business.
One of its cornerstone initiatives is the ‘Mums and Boorai’s Yarning Circle’, a space for mothers, caregivers and pregnant women to come together, share experiences, and access support in a welcoming, culturally safe environment.
Kristen shares how the yarning circle has become a trusted support hub for families. Whether it’s navigating parenthood, accessing services, or simply having a safe space to yarn – the program is helping to reduce isolation and build strong, culturally connected relationships.
The episode also highlights how programs offered at Barrbunin Beek are shaped and guided by community voices. Kristen and Leila (Lorell) yarn about the importance of listening to what Mob need, connecting with Mob, and how these needs inform the services they provide to their circles.
Kristen also touches upon Barrbunin Beek’s plans to expand its reach and continue delivering programs that reflect community priorities. From cultural events to health promotion activities, Barrbunin Beek remains committed to creating strong, safe, and supportive spaces for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
