The third North Eastern Public Health Network – Health Protection Public Health Clinical Series webinar for 2025 was held on Avian Influenza on 9 December
Hosted by Dr Annaliese van Diemen (NEPHU Director), the session included Dr Elly Layton (NEPHU Public Health Registrar) who provided a clear and timely overview of the evolving situation in Australia and internationally.
The webinar features presentations on topics including:
- Current epidemiology of avian influenza including H5 bird flu
- Risks of human transmission internationally and in Australia
- Clinical presentation of avian influenza
- How to safety test for avian influenza
- Pandemic management of avian influenza in the event of human-to-human transmission

NEPHU updates
Dr Claire Gordon, (NEPHU Medical Specialist and Infectious Diseases Physician) presented an update on NEPHU’s recent measles immunisation project.
NEPHU is working with the Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (EMPHN) and North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) to promote the uptake of free MMR vaccine in primary care settings for under-immunised adult cohorts within the catchment as part of the broader statewide initiative.

The NEPHN-HP Public Health Clinical Series aims to bring together clinical stakeholders (across community, primary and tertiary health services and residential facilities) within North-Eastern Melbourne to discuss topical public health issues in an interactive format.
